Lady Bears down Mustangs, Win Section 8A East

The Lake of the Wood Bears got by the Red Lake County Central Mustangs Tuesday night in Thief River Falls 59-50 to win the Section 8A East title. The Bears will play the Northern Freeze Friday evening in TRF for the Section 8A title and a trip to the state tournament.

The Bears led 21-20 at halftime and never looked back from there. The Bears' Jessica Marken picked up 16 of her 25 points in the second half to pace the Bears.

The Lake of the Woods Bears lost to Win-E-Mac Monday night in Bemidji 69-59 in Section 8A boys basketball playoff action. The loss ends the Bears season with 19 losses and six wins.

Lady Bears advance to meet RLCC in quarters

The girls’ basketball team entered the Section 8A tournament last week. Seeded second in Section 8A East, they got a bye in the pig-tail round.
Their first game was played in Bemidji March 4th in the play-in round. Their opponent was Kelliher/Northome, who had beat out Laporte 47-36 on March 2nd. The Mustangs came into the tournament ranked seventh.
The Lady Bears beat the Mustangs by a score of 61-32, sending them on to the quarterfinal game.



Northern Freeze blast Bears

MCC/Northern Freeze handed the Lake of the Woods Bears their worst loss of the season Tuesday, March 2, 93-32.
“I think we were a little intimidated going in and it showed,” Bears’ head coach Bob Laine said after the game.
The Bears turned the ball over 32 times and didn’t have anybody in double figures in scoring. Nick Schoper and Mac Johnson each had eight points for Lake of the Woods.



Hockeytown hosts Section 8 all-star hockey games

The 3rd annual Hockeytown Hockey Classic Section 8 all-star game will be held at The Gardens Arena on Tuesday, March 16.
Hosted by Warroad Memorial Arena Association (WMAA), the event will include a girls’ and a boys’ game consisting of Section 8A all-stars competing against those from Section 8AA. The teams will be comprised of the best varsity players from Section 8, regardless of age whom have been nominated by their coaches.

The regular season is finished for the Lady Bears’ basketball team. The regular season ended with a 14 win, 10 loss record, putting them in second seed for the section tournament.
First they had to play Clearbrook-Gonvick and Crosby-Ironton last week.

Clearbrook-Gonvick
Tuesday the Lady Bears hosted Clearbrook-Gonvick, their closest opponent in the section. The Lady Bears beat the Bears 68-41.



Bearcats end hockey Bears' season

A third-period rally by the Lake of the Woods Bears was cut short Thursday evening as KCC’s Craig Lindegard scored with 3:30 left in the third period. The goal snapped a 3-3 tie and ended the Bears’ season.
It was Lindegard’s second goal of the game. The Bearcats’ forward is one of Minnesota’s top scorers.
The Bears opened the scoring at 6:24 of the first period on a goal by Jake Pelach. Evan Dahl and Travis Tom picked up the assists on the goal.

The Lake of the Woods Bears will meet Kittson County Central Thursday evening in East Grand Forks in the first round of the Section 8A hockey tournament.The Bears are seeded fifth in the tournament while the Bearcats received the fourth seed.
The Bears and Bearcats split their two meetings this season. Lake of the Woods defeated KCC 4-3 in overtime in Baudette on December 1st. The Bearcats returned the favor in Hallock on January 26, blanking the Bears 3-0.

The Lake of the Woods Bears split a pair of games this past week leaving only two games left on the schedule before the regular season wraps up.

Blackduck
The Bears gave up a season-high 74 shots and 24 offensive rebounds as Blackduck handed Lake of the Woods a 65-50 loss Tuesday, February 16.
The Drakes built a 35-21 lead at halftime on the strength of Josh Redday’s 13 first half points.
