The Lake of the Wood Bears got by the Red Lake County Central Mustangs Tuesday night in Thief River Falls 59-50 to win the Section 8A East title. The Bears will play the Northern Freeze Friday evening in TRF for the Section 8A title and a trip to the state tournament.
The Bears led 21-20 at halftime and never looked back from there. The Bears' Jessica Marken picked up 16 of her 25 points in the second half to pace the Bears.

The Lake of the Woods Bears lost to Win-E-Mac Monday night in Bemidji 69-59 in Section 8A boys basketball playoff action. The loss ends the Bears season with 19 losses and six wins.

The first topic posed to governor’s candidate Mark Dayton was about how the state could ever get out of debt.
Dayton’s answer was quick and to the point: tax the rich. Later he explained that some conservatives had discussed a flat tax, where everyone pays the same percentage of tax. That, he said, would be an improvement but a graduated tax so the wealthiest carry the biggest tax burden, would be better.

Deciding to go into the nightcrawler breeding business was one that the Wiersma family debated for about three years. Research and health issues came into play, but when they learned that the business is actually two-in-one, that sealed the deal.
Since December, the family has been getting their new business, Creepy Crawler Industries off the ground. It was after talking to another worm farmer that Dean Wiersma was told, “don’t forget about the castings.”

Plans are underway to improve two highways vital to Borderland’s transportation network.
Work on sections of U.S. Highway 53 and Minnesota Highway 11 is scheduled and may impact travelers on their way in and out of the International Falls area, according to local officials, who detailed the plans at a recent International Falls Area Chamber of Commerce Brown Bag Lunch.
