In the last few weeks Steve Wymore added a few extra meetings to his schedule. The Lake of the Woods School District superintendent put on a series of public meetings designed to explain what a four-day school week would be like at Lake of the Woods and why it might be necessary. The meetings have also been a way for him to learn what concerns residents of the district have about the idea.

A regional outbreak of Salmonellosis in birds has been spreading to local pets, and a local veterinarian says people with birdfeeders should stop feeding until the current migration has passed.
Wayne Hasbargen, who operates veterinary clinics in Baudette, International Falls and Warroad, said he has seen a number of cases of Salmonellosis infection in pets lately, particularly in Baudette and International Falls. Most of the sick animals have been cats that probably caught the disease after eating infected birds.
Willie Walleye will be 50 years old in 2009! In honor of this event, the Lake of the Woods Historical Society is sponsoring a story competition to gather creative stories about Willie Walleye that can be shared during the birthday celebration in June. The purpose of the story competition is to engage people of all ages in thinking about a unique landmark that has represented our community for fifty years by encouraging them to write about Willie Walleye to make him bigger than life (more than just a landmark).

John Kirchner, the public relations manager for Marvin Windows in Warroad, says that even with the current downturn in the American economy Marvin is sticking to its longtime commitment not to lay off employees. “This is a longtime commitment the company has made to the community,” Kirchner said.

The Baudette/Lake of the Woods International Airport and Seaplane Base is getting an upgrade, and the airport’s manager, Emory Vaagen, says it’s all a matter of timing.
Over the next few months nearly $1.1 million worth of new projects will go in at the airport.
“This looks like a tremendous year,” Vaagen said, “but it’s just the way things came together.”

There will be a chemical spill in Baudette Saturday, along with a partial city evacuation, a motor vehicle accident, a downed power line, plenty of injured people and a cloud of poisonous vapor floating across Baudette Bay towards East Baudette.
The deadline for passports is fast approaching. On June 1, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a Passport, Passport Card, or other travel document approved by the Department of Homeland Security.

Baudette City Council sailed through its regularly scheduled April meeting in less than an hour Monday afternoon.
Beltrami County Sheriff Phil Hodapp surprised Williams resident Roger Huerd by presenting him with a life-saving award Saturday, April 4, at the Westwind Restaurant in Waskish.
