The Lake of the Woods track athletes went to the section meet in Crookston June 5th. No one advanced to state competition but several competed well.
Saragh Fraser placed fifth in the 400-meter dash, cutting down her qualifying time to 1:02.66. She got four team points for her efforts.
The girls’ 4x400-meter relay team finished in eighth place with one team point. They completed the race in 4:27.85, about one second slower than their qualifying time.
Jessi Marken got three team points in her sixth place finish in the pole vault. She cleared 8-06 to qualify and gained an inch in the section.
The girls’ team finished 17th in the meet with eight points.
Ryan Gustafson made it to the 100-meter dash final with a fifth place finish in the preliminaries. In the final he finished sixth in 12.01 seconds. He went on to a fifth place finish in the 200-meter dash in 23.87. Gustafson holds the school record for the 100-meter dash of 11.23.
In the 400-meter dash Kyle Poolman took fifth and Joncarlo Westerlund tied for sixth. Their times were 54.23 and 54.24, off by one-hundredth of a second.
Distance runner Bryan Hasbargen was ninth in the 3200-meter run. He qualified with a time of 11:28.41 and finished at sections in 10:57.90, an incredible 30 second improvement from subsections.
Senior Chris Flores did not advance to state, finishing eighth in shot put and 11th in the discus. He did, however, break his own school record with his 133-05 throw at subsections in the discus.
After the meet, boys’ coach Bob Laine said he thanks everyone involved with track and field, as this is his last season coaching. Added teaching responsibilities prevent him from spending as much time as necessary to coach, he said. “I am grateful to have been able to work with so many talented young people and great coaches from other schools,” he said.
