The road construction season is upon us, and two major projects are happening to our east.
First is the second year of a two-year project to replace the bridge at Clementson. After the I-35W bridge collapse, a study was done of all bridges in the state. The bridge at Clementson was found to be deficient and a new bridge is going in.
Second is the 18 miles of Highway 11 that will be widened and repaved. This is the third piece of a six-piece project between Baudette and International Falls.
The completed work is the section of highway from Clementson to Frontier Landing. This year will be from Frontier to Indus. Next year will be from Baudette to Clementson. In 2012 will be from Indus to Loman and in 2014 from Loman to Pelland.
When it is finished, the roadway will be a 10-ton road, which will allow local haulers to use the road all year long without spring weight restrictions.
A sturdier, better-built road will be good for residents and tourists, as it is plain to see how the roadway takes a beating. Years and years of patching have made it a treacherous ride.
There may be some inconveniences during construction, including some days when the road will be impassible because a large culvert has been removed. Remember that short inconveniences now will pay off with a better road at the end.
Also, take it easy on the crews working on the project. Don’t travel in their way if you don’t have to. If you do need to pass, use common sense when it comes to speed and road conditions.
The crews want to do a good job, so help them out by planning ahead and using caution.
As we get information about construction progress or road closures, we will post them on a blog on our website at www.baudetteregion.com. You are invited to not only log on to read the updates, but to write about what you have seen as you travel on the road. To contribute to the blog or make comment, you will have to get a free log in name.
Check back often and we will share any information we receive.
