It’s the time of year that the city and county have to submit their levies and budgets, and both agencies did that at their meetings last week.
The city met Thursday night and adopted a levy of $211,817, which is $192,817 for the city and $19,000 for the fire department.
County
The county adopted a levy of $2,255,463. This goes to the revenue fund, road and bridge fund and welfare fund. In addition, $455,805 will be levied against unorganized townships. This is for township road and bridge fund, township fire, Williams and Northwest Angle.
Commissioner Todd Beckel started a discussion, saying he felt he was not ready to adopt the budget since the county board has not finished with department budgets, salaries or insurance yet. The budgets had to be submitted by September 15th. He said the chairman of the board has missed several of the budget meetings and had not given the board good direction on how to proceed with budgets. “I may sound like I’m scolding, and I am,” Beckel said.
County Auditor John Hoscheid also said that having the budget process drag on was difficult for his office, as they have been busy with election preparations.
The board members set more budget meetings, now reined in by the budget they set last week, and they asked board vice-chair Patty Beckel to lead the discussions.

Back to page topReaders: Chairman Kim Bredeson phone the office shortly after this story was printed to say that he had, in fact, attended all of the budget meetings. I apologize for taking Commissioner Todd Beckel at his word, as I did not check the minutes of the budget meetings to check on Mr. Bredeson's attendance.
